Purchasing new winter tires for your SUV

SUV studded tires

If you are planning to buy new SUV winter tires, there are a few things that you should know. When it comes to the different tire options, you will find the same almost the same type of tires as you can find for normal passenger cars, except that they are larger for the SUVs.  For SUV you can also find good off-road tire options. If you are going to drive during winter conditions, you need winter tires for your SUV. Using SUV all-season tires during winter conditions might be legal in some areas but it can be very dangerous. This is because the rubber compound that they use in all-season tires has been optimized for warm temperatures to ensure that you have the best performance during these conditions. This leads to the fact that once the temperatures drop below 45 degrees Fahrenheit, the rubber will become hard and will then lose a lot of the grip that you would have if you used a softer tire. For cold conditions you need tires that have a rubber compound that has been optimized for low temperatures.

This is the one of the reasons you shouldn’t drive with all-season tires during the winter.  You need tires that are winter approved, uses the correct rubber compound and have the right tread pattern. You don’t need to wait for snow or ice for you to shift to winter tires, as they perform better than all-season tires already when the all-season tires get hard, i.e., around 45 degrees Fahrenheit. You therefore have to find good winter tires to put on your car before the winter arrives. You have the same choices as you have for a passenger car, you have SUV studded tires in the places where they are legal to use, then you have the SUV non-studded tires, and, in some markets, you have SUV all-weather tires that can be used all year round. If you need tires that can handle off-road driving, they will often be reinforced with aramid fibers so that they can handle side impacts better in case you hit curbs or potholes. This makes them much more durable and perfect for off-road driving or on poorly maintained roads. You should always look for this when you purchase SUV tires.

The tire choice will strongly depend on where you live, where you drive, and how you drive. Generally, the studded tires will provide you with the best grip, especially on ice, but they have the most limitation when it comes to where you can drive as they are not allowed in all states and provinces and are only allowed to be used during the winter months. The non-studded can be used anywhere and anytime but should only be used during the winter season. Then you have the SUV all-weather tires, which are a fantastic combination of summer and winter tires, and they allow you to always have the correct tires to drive safely and not have to change tires due to weather conditions.
